Existing Solutions

To better understand the problems facing my client, I searched the App Store in pursuit of a software that could help her more easily manage her pet documents. The solutions I found were not visually pleasing—my client said that she felt overwhelmed by the number of buttons, categories, and links presented to her on each of the screens.

Insights Gained from Competitive Analysis

After gathering information on multiple pet companion apps, I found that the main issues had to do with the complexity of the interface. Within these apps, users are prompted to add important pet info and pet-related documents. When this info is displayed back to the user, it's shown next to a plethora of other information. Important documents are placed next to pet info, which is placed next to links to external sites. Visually and functionally, all apps included in my research were cluttered and presented too many options at once to be useful.

Design Decisions

After completing my competitive analysis and reviewing the problems associated with existing solutions on the market, I found that all features within pet management apps can be broken down into three categories: pet info, pet documents, and pet reminders.

With this idea in mind, I created an initial mockup with a streamlined approach to pet management. I focused on simplifying my solution to make it as easy as possible for users to accomplish their goals within the app.

Users need a place to store documents like vet visit notes, vaccination records and pet sitter guides. For peace of mind, they also want to be reminded of upcoming vet visits, plus times to get food, toys and more.

For each pet that the user adds to the app, the end result is one screen with a simple layout for viewing documents, reminders under the main pet profile.
